About

What began in the late 1980s as a movement led by a small group of women inspired by Gandhian ideals officially became WORD — Women’s Organisation for Rural Development — in 1991.

For over three decades, WORD has worked to address gender inequality, female infanticide, poverty, lack of healthcare, environmental degradation, and the social exclusion of marginalized communities across rural Tamil Nadu.

Today, WORD continues to empower women, support vulnerable children, improve access to education and healthcare, strengthen rural livelihoods, and create sustainable community-led development.

We believe all women can embrace who they are,
can define their future, and can change the world.

Our Mission

Our Mission

WORD India is committed to empowering women, children, and marginalized rural communities through education, healthcare, sustainable livelihoods, environmental conservation, and social justice initiatives. Since 1991, we have worked towards creating self-reliant, inclusive, and healthier communities by supporting vulnerable individuals with dignity, compassion, and community-led development.
